How can I choose the right guardian for my child?

On Behalf of | Oct 3, 2019 | Guardianships |

It’s not a subject most parents want to think about. Picking a guardian for your child should something happen to you and your spouse can be difficult, but it’s important to ensure your child is well cared for in case something happens. According to Forbes, there are important questions you should ask yourself when making the decision, and these questions can help you make the best choice.

What is the person’s current family structure?

Unless you’re choosing a single individual, you’ll need to take into account the person’s existing family dynamic. If he or she is married, consider the health of their marital relationship. Also, consider what might occur if there was a divorce. If the person has children living in the home, also consider the health of those relationships. Even if the guardian possesses the qualities you’re looking for, home life is also an important concern.

Does the person have a strong bond with your child?

Being raised in a loving family is a must for a happy and healthy childhood. That’s why it’s best to place your child with a person who already has a strong emotional bond with them. This doesn’t necessarily need to be a family member, either. It can also be a close friend of the family who’s played a significant role in the life of your child.

Is the person stable?

Along with emotional bonds, the guardian should also have a stable life. This entails being financially stable to ensure your child’s material needs will be taken care of. The guardian should also be stable in other ways, such as having full-time employment and a home.
